ISIH offers the BA Humanities and Sustainability (BAHS), a multidisciplinary humanities programme that explores human societies and their relationship with sustainability. Our courses cover a wide range of topics, including ecocriticism, global environmental history, technology and society, Indigenous studies, diaspora and transnational studies, postcolonial studies, posthuman philosophy and many more.
For the full list of courses, please see the BAHS curriculum.
For 200 level courses (0492XX), we aim to offer as many courses as possible each semester. These courses are also part of the required curriculum for our BAHS students.
300 and 400 level courses (0493XX and 0494XX) are major elective courses, so the courses offered may vary from semester to semester. Exchange students will receive an update on available courses before their arrival. You can also check the News and Events section of this website for the latest course updates.
For course registration, exchange students must first receive their CMU student ID number. Course registration will then be completed with assistance from staff at our International Office after students arrive on campus.
Our teaching staff use a variety of teaching styles, including lectures, conversational and seminar-based discussions, and activity-led learning. Despite these differences, all classes expect students to pay attention, participate, and engage actively with the learning process.
Exchange students are encouraged to adapt to these different teaching styles and take an active role in class. Being open to different ways of learning will help you make the most of your time at ISIH, engage with your classmates and teachers, and develop your own ideas through discussion and participation.
Accommodation for exchange students can be limited, particularly around the start of Semester 1 and Semester 2, when demand for housing near the university is high.
We have prepared a list of accommodation options in and around Chiang Mai University that may be suitable for exchange students. However, students are also welcome to explore other options and arrange their accommodation independently before arriving in Chiang Mai.
We recommend arranging your accommodation as early as possible, especially if you are arriving near the beginning of a semester.
The BA Humanities and Sustainability (BAHS) programme at ISIH has a Buddy System for exchange students. Each exchange student will be paired with a BAHS student who can help you settle into life at CMU during your first few weeks.
Your buddy can help you get familiar with the campus, introduce you to student activities and events, and recommend places to eat, relax, and explore around CMU and Chiang Mai. It is also a great way to meet other CMU students and start building friendships during your exchange.
Staff at our partner universities can follow the steps below as a guide to nominating students for exchange at ISIH.
